Braces – are they only for children?
At Old Windsor we have noticed a growing awareness by our patients of their aesthetic appearance, which has resulted in more and more adults resorting to enquiring about how they can straighten their teeth and improve their smile. In the past braces Windsor, using metal brackets, were glued and connected with a series of wires and this was the standard treatment to straighten your teeth. This was considered the way to straighten children’s teeth as well and was seldom used for adults. In the past the mere thought of walking around with this appliance attached to their teeth was enough to put adults off the idea. For this reason using traditional braces to straighten an adult’s teeth was seldom considered as an acceptable form of treatment by them.
Braces, why would I need them
There are many reasons that indicate if you need treatment to straighten teeth as an adult or a child. The most common one is because teeth are obviously crooked or the mouth appears crowded, it may be that you experience difficulty trying to floss your teeth and you find that you cannot get the floss between them. However you may also need treatment if occasionally you find you are biting your tongue or the inside of your cheek or finding that you are cutting your tongue with your teeth. Another reason can be an overbite or finding it difficult to pronounce certain words because your teeth hinder your ability to get your tongue into the correct position. If you have a jaw that makes a clicking sound when you chew or you find that your jaw feels tired after you have had a meal, all of these are an indication that your teeth or your jaw are not properly aligned and need attention.
Braces, how times have changed
These days you no longer need to accept just the one type of dental aligner as there are a variety of options available. Firstly you need to know that the only other genuine option to correct crooked teeth apart from an aligner is surgery to straighten your teeth. Our practice offers the full range of braces Windsor available on the market. The metal braces using wires and brackets which attach to the front of the teeth are still available, but there have been advancements to teeth straightening devices. Heat activated arch-wires have been introduced and aid the quicker movement of your teeth. Ceramic braces Windsor are very similar to metal ones, but they are less visible due to the colour being more like that of your own teeth. Lingual braces fit to the inside of your teeth and are not so visible, however they do not correct all problems and your dentist will advise if these are correct for you. The most recent invention has been that of clear aligners which are the least visible and don’t look like traditional aligners.
