What to expect with dental implants in Windsor
The ways in which we can cosmetically improve your teeth have come along in leaps and bounds over the years, thanks to ongoing improvements in the dental industry. Now we can straighten up those crooked teeth, and fill out a gap-toothed gum line, to leave you with a star quality smile.
One type of cosmetic treatment we can use to help you buff up those chompers, is through the insertion of an implant. Here’s a brief summary of what you can expect when you book an appointment for dental implants in Windsor.
What are they?
Although they sound pretty surgical, this treatment is fairly minor and not as overly invasive as it may seem. It basically involves the insertion of a prosthetic tooth into a pre chosen point in your gum line, to either fill in gaps or to replace critically damaged teeth. The new implant is normally made from Porcelain, and your dentist will take a cast of the area to ensure it blends in with the surrounding teeth, in order to give you a natural looking smile.
What does the procedure involve?
The treatment process itself is fairly minor and involves inserting a sterile Titanium screw into your jawbone. A cap is then placed on this screw and a prosthetic tooth is then fitted to it, either then or at a later date. Generally, there are two methods of implantation; the Endosteal and Subperiosteal.
The first method is as we described above, but the second involves implanting the screw below your gum-line but above the bone. This tends to be used when there is not enough healthy bone in your jaw to graft to, or reconstructive surgery of the area is not an option.
Even though it all sounds fairly complicated, in reality it’s fairly simple.
When you visit Old Windsor Dental Practice our team will take you through the implantation process step by step. We take things at your pace and will only proceed when you feel comfortable with your treatment.
Are there benefits?
There are numerous advantages to booking an appointment for dental implants in Windsor. To begin with, the prosthetic blends right in with your surrounding teeth and creates a natural, more pleasing smile. It’s also very easy to keep clean; we recommend just brushing it as you would the rest of your teeth, although try to avoid mouthwash for a while as the chemicals can irritate your gum’s ability to heal.
Complications of implantation
Like any treatment, there are things that can go wrong if you don’t look after it. With implantation, you can run the risk of Peri-implant Mucositis, which is the inflammation of the area surrounding the tooth. This can occur when bacteria builds up around the implant and can cause it to become loose, as well as degrade the surrounding bone if it’s left untreated.
Hopefully this has helped clear up a few facts about the implantation process. If you’re curious about what this type of treatment can offer you, then please ask us on your next appointment.
